4/13 Ancient Civilizations Workshop: "A Tale of Two Kingdoms (and a Few Cities)"

Please join the Ancient Civilizations Workshop for Professor Alain Bresson's talk entitled "A Kingdom of Two Tales (and a Few Cities)" this Friday, April 13th at 12:00 pm in Gates Blake 133.

Prof. Bresson is the Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Classics and Department of History. He specializes in the study of ancient economy, with a focus on the evolution of institutions. He has also published extensively on topics including the history, epigraphy and numismatics of the ancient world.

In this workshop, Professor Bresson will investigate the role of coinage in the ancient Greek world. He will address the role of countermarks on the silver coins of four cities in Pamphylia during the second century BCE. He will demonstrate how these countermarks will help reveal the monetary policies of both the Attalid kingdom and Seleukid kingdom, as well as the autonomy of some Pamphylian cities and their role as economic hubs.
