Job: Postdoctoral position at the University of Bergen

Postdoctoral position in Russian Studies

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Foreign Languages, by plan starting 1 August 2018 or as agreed. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.
The Department of Foreign Languages spans nine different languages, and teaching and research are conducted in the disciplines language/linguistics, literature, cultural studies and didactics ( The Department has around 50 permanent academic staff members, along with four post-docs, around twenty PhD candidates and eleven administrative members of staff.

The position is affiliated with the ongoing research project Cultural Policies and Practices in Contemporary Russia directed by Professor Ingunn Lunde. The project seeks to bring together the fields of literary studies and linguistics with approaches from literary sociology and anthropology in the investigation of cultural policies and cultural practices – and their dynamic yet complex interrelationship – in Russia since the turn of the century. It aims to determine how cultural practices are shaped by, and shape, state-defined cultural priorities and policies, to map the broader development of art and politics in post-Soviet Russia, to identify and describe the particular discourses and modes of communication that are used by artists, in particular by writers, in responding to cultural policies (and to political questions in general) and to explore the artist’s/writer’s position between social, political and aesthetical commitment. Project proposals may pertain to a relevant empirical field (e.g. the cultural/literary/artistic response to history politics or language policy) and/or to a central theoretical issue (e.g. literature between politics and aesthetics; artistic, ‘performative’ practices as political statements).

Application Deadline: April 30, 2018
