What do Syria, Russia, Turkey, and Greece all have in common? They were all once under the sphere of the Byzantine Empire’s influence. This “Forgotten Empire” was a Greek-speaking, Orthodox Christian extension of the Roman Empire that survived for 1000 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire’s western half. It is also the crucial, frequently overlook thread that unites our world’s most volatile regions and conflicts. These hotspots seem acutely incomprehensible, because we in the West are generally working from a different historical narrative than those in other parts of the world— the Byzantines are a huge part of their narratives.

Join us near the 564th anniversary of the Empire’s fall to explore the ways in which the legacy of the Byzantines lives today and how this fabled kingdom has shaped the world we live in.
