- Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA)
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) is one of the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI National Language Resource Centers, whose role is to improve the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign languages effectively. Their Less Commonly Taught Languages Project tracks information on locations in North America where students can study specific less commonly taught languages and also provides information about study abroad opportunities. - American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages
AATSEEL maintains a listing of intensive programs in Slavic and East European languages as well as in the languages of the Republics of the former Soviet Union. KU has a number of summer study abroad programs open to non-KU students, including programs in Croatia, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. - Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the University of Pittsburgh
The Russian and East European Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the University of Pittsburgh offers comprehensive introductory and advanced instruction in eleven major languages. All courses are intensive (meeting five hours a day, five days a week) and proficiency-oriented (emphasizing maximum communicative ability by developing all four basic skills - speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension). Participants, who come from all over the United States and Canada, include graduate students whose research requires advanced linguistic competence, undergraduates continuing or getting a headstart on language acquisition, and non-traditional students interested in reclaiming their heritage. Many of our students have immediate or long-range plans for traveling to the country of their target language upon completion of the SLI. The diversity of student interests provides a rich basis for lively and productive classroom interaction. - Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European and Central Asian Languages (SWSEEL)
Intensive language training has been offered at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since 1950. The Summer Workshop provides up to 200 participants in Slavic, East European and Central Asian languages the opportunity to complete a full year of college language instruction during an eight-week summer session. - Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI)
BALSSI offers intensive Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian courses and is hosted each summer by a different member of the supporting universities: the University of Washington in 1994 and 1995, the University of Illinois in 1996 and 1997, Indiana University in 1998 and 1999, the University of Iowa in 2000 and 2001, the University of Illinois in 2002, University of Washington in 2003 and 2004, and Indiana University in 2005 and 2006. The Center for World Languages at the University of California, Los Angeles, will host the Baltic Studies Summer Institute in the summer of 2007. - International Seminar on Macedonian Language, Literature, and Culture (Ss. - University of Chicago Europe: East and West Program
The College-sponsored Europe: East and West Program, offered in Paris in Winter quarter, provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to explore the rich cultural ties between France and the Slavic countries. The Program recognizes and celebrates the long-standing role of Paris as a destination for a steady stream of Eastern European artists, writers, musicians, statesmen, and scientists, individuals who formed vibrant émigré communities in the French capital, enriching and being enriched by the intellectual scene therein. - CET Academic Programs in Prague
CET now offers several study abroad programs in the capital of the Czech Republic. These include programs in Central European Studies, Jewish Studies, Film Production, and Photography. Each of these programs utilizes CET's expanding networks in Prague to facilitate cultural immersion. Designed to meet the needs of students who have two years of college-level Russian or more (including heritage speakers) the Bard-Smolny Program in St. Petersburg offers an academically rich environment for students from North American college and universities wishing to study abroad in Russia for a single semester or for the full academic year. In the Bard-Smolny Program students enroll side by side with Russian students in classes at Smolny College, the first liberal arts college in Russia. The program enables students to advance their level of competency in the Russian language in our Russian as a Second Language (RSL) program while simultaneously taking other academic courses that meet requirements for their B.A. degree at their home college or university. Smolny College offers courses in 20 academic areas including: art history and architecture, international relations, political studies and human rights; literature, music and performing arts; and sociology and anthropology. - Northwestern Buffett Center Summer Abroad
The Buffett Center for International and Comparative Studies at Northwestern University sponsors three summer study abroad programs that take students to Prague, Croatia, and Istanbul respectively. Moscow has a unique variety of options to offer to students interested in science, humanities, culture, arts, politics and religion. The program, which can be taken either in the fall or spring semesters, or as a summer study away, appeals specifically to students keen on the Russian literature, theater, music, icons, as well as those who wish to concentrate on language study, history, or social issues. Structured with extreme flexibility, the program exposes students to the Russian language, culture, history, art, folklore, and social life through an intensive Russian course available at all levels, folklore expeditions available on request (summer and winter), as well as through individual seminars on a variety of topics, individually tailored internships in charity, education, or human rights, and a choice of apprenticeships ranging from church bell-ringing and icon-painting to theatrical scenery-making. - Abraham Lincoln Center
The Abraham Lincoln Foundation was founded by Americans as an Albanian non-profit educational development organization in Tirana. The Center offers an "Albanian for Foreigners" course, which is intended for students who would like to learn how to improve their communication skills in everyday situations.
