Announcing Garden Conversations – A brownbag lunch series on Czech Culture

One of the founding aims of The Masaryk Club was to bring different aspects of Czechoslovak culture to the University of Chicago community. It is in this spirit that The Masaryk Club, in cooperation with The Center for East European and Russian Eurasian Studies, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature, and the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities, is pleased to announce the launch of Garden Conversations – a monthly brownbag lunch series on Czech Culture.  These events will take place from 12:00-1:00pm in Classics 110.

Each lunchtime conversation will focus on a particular moment in Czech history or culture that might be of interest to a wide variety of people. We have two events already scheduled for Winter 2017 that will be led by Prof. Malynne Sternstein:

  • Wednesday, February 8 – Budvar vs. Budweiser - A History of Beer in Bohemia
  • Date TBA – Operation Anthropoid - The Assassination of Rudolf Heydrich

For more information about these events please see or email us at

We hope that you will bring your lunch to Classics 110 and join us in conversation starting on February 8 to discuss the history of Czech beer.
