CEERES of Voices: Rachel Applebaum - "Empire of Friends"

Thursday, May 23, 2019

On Thursday May 23 at 5:30 p.m., join CEERES for a conversation with Rachel Applebaum, Assistant Professor of Russian and East European History at Tufts University, who will discuss her book Empire of Friends.

The familiar story of Soviet power in Cold War Eastern Europe focuses on political repression and military force. But Empire of Friends shows how the Soviet Union promoted a policy of transnational friendship with its Eastern Bloc satellites. This created a new type of imperial control based on cross-border contacts between ordinary citizens.

Professors Tara Zahra and Eleonor Gilburd will moderate the discussion.
