CFP: Kurdish Studies Conference

International Kurdish Studies Conference

New Perspectives in Kurdish Studies

Call for Papers

July 24-25, 2019

As shifting conflicts in the Middle East keep Kurds at the forefront of the news cycle, Kurdish identity and culture are gaining recognition worldwide. The global Kurdish landscape extends beyond the Middle East, to large diasporas in Europe and significant Kurdish communities in North America. The academic study of Kurds, too, is gaining new momentum, with scholarly interest extending to Kurds outside the Middle East. This two-day, interdisciplinary conference is designed to extend the ongoing conversation on Kurds and Kurdistan.

We invite paper proposals from scholars in the humanities and social sciences on any aspect of Kurdish Studies, including language, culture, history, religion, gender, and politics. We are open to a range of methodological orientations: literary, ethnographic, archival, comparative historical, and quantitative. Of particular interest are such topics as literature, nationalism, religious minorities, political ideologies, memory and violence, language contact and language standardization, and diasporic cultures.

Northeastern Illinois University is located in Chicago, IL. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, NEIU is initiating in 2019 a Kurdish Studies Program at the undergraduate level. In Summer of 2019, NEIU will host a Summer School of Kurdish Language and Culture, taught in collaboration with Zahra Institute.
