Dear CEERES Friends and Associates,

We hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer. We here at the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies want to welcome everyone to the 2022-2023 academic year.

Unfortunately, CEERES was not successful in our application for Title VI NRC and FLAS funding for the 2022-2026 cycle. Exactly what this will mean for CEERES in the long term is yet to be determined. We remain committed to supporting the vital research, teaching, and events of our affiliated faculty and students.

CEERES will also continue to host virtual, hybrid, and in-person events throughout the year. And we are again looking forward to another year of engaging programming starting this Friday, September 23 at 12:00 pm with the roundtable: The Russia-Ukraine War: What Comes Next? Co-sponsored with The Pearson Institute, scholars from Ukraine and Chicago will discuss  the recent Ukrainian counteroffensive, life in Ukraine during wartime, new evidence of Russian war crimes, and other topics. We also invite you to join CEERES and the Pozen Center in attending the Closing Night Event for Belarus: Faces of Resistance on Friday, September 30 from 7:00 pm at Southspace Creative . The exhibit features the work of nine artists, photojournalists, and filmmakers from Belarus, chronicling the popular protests of Summer 2020. Closing night features a discussion with protest photographer Aliaksandr Pasechnik and a performance of Belarusian music by musician and ethnographer Sergei Dougushou.

Our weekly eBulletin will return next week when classes begin. Our website will also help connect you to events, courses, and resources on the CEERES regions. In addition to our events archive, you can also catch up on past CEERES events at our YouTube channel

Sincerely,
