Armenian Circle, Weds 5-12 Antoin Sevruguin: An Armenian-Iranian Photographer in Qajar Iran
Dear Friends of the Armenian Circle,
This Wednesday, May 12 at 6 pm we are excited to present Antoin Sevruguin: An Armenian-Iranian Photographer in Qajar Iran. Curator Tasha Vorderstrasse will be giving a virtual tour of the Oriental Institute's exhibit of Sevruguin's photographs, in addition to his legacy shown through the work of Iranian-Canadian artist Yassaman Ameri.

Tasha Vorderstrasse is the University and Continuing Education Program Coordinator at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.

The piece is an academic and creative writing hybrid work sharing stories of women engaged in peacebuilding in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, and exploring issues of geopolitics, life in a conflict zone, Armenian feminism, and the process and importance of creating narratives. The presentation will be in English and is open to all.

Dear Friends of the Armenian Circle,
Our next Armenian Circle Meeting will be this Wednesday 1-27 at 7 pm. This week, Pietro Shakarian will be presenting Yerevan 1954, or An Armenian Reformer in Khrushchev’s Kremlin: Anastas Mikoyan and the Politics of Difference in the USSR. The presentation will be in English and is open to all.
Pietro A. Shakarian is a historian and a Ph.D. candidate in Russian History at the Ohio State University. His dissertation focuses on Mikoyan’s reforms in de-Stalinization and the nationality sphere in the Khrushchev-era USSR. His analyses on Russia, Armenia, and the post-Soviet space have appeared in The Nation, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Russian International Affairs Council, Russia Direct, and Hetq. He has also worked with the Gomidas Institute in London on the republication of 19th century accounts of the Russian Caucasus and Armenia.
