SEVDAH: from ancient epics to the modern song

Lecture on Music and Popular Culture:
Building on Imamovic’s brilliant book Sevdah (2016), this lecture will provide an overview of this thriving genre from its origins in the South Slavic epic traditions to the contemporary, modern music. Often compared to fado, rebetiko, and the blues, sevdah was formed out of meetings of different worlds of music and languages from Balkan, Ottoman, and Eastern European cultures. This event is a rare chance for American audiences to hear about sevdah music from one its most prominent contemporary performers.
