NSEP Boren Fellowships provide up to funding to graduate and undergraduate students to add an important international and language component to their education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

NATIONAL DEADLINE: February 3, 2021.

Graduate students from all departments are invited to submit written and artistic work to Lights, the official journal of the University of Chicago’s Middle Eastern Studies Student Association. Please submit papers of 20 pages or fewer in an editable format.

Is democracy in recession around the world, or is it striking back? Democracy worldwide is under assault by a spectrum of authoritarian regimes. Their anti-democratic toolbox varies from voter suppression to media control and state-sanctioned violence, but protesters and activists around the world are using some of the same technological tools to fight for freedom of assembly and expression. This concluding workshop is designed to give teachers tools for introducing these regions and their issues into the classroom, as well as project ideas to further enrich their students.

The American Research Institute in Turkey is pleased to offer ARIT fellowships for research in Turkey for the 2021-2022 year. Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of the humanities and social sciences, are eligible to apply.

For summer 2021, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer full travel and fellowships for approximately 18 advanced students and scholars for participation in the summer program in advanced Turkish language at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul.
