The University of Iowa Translation Program is pleased to announce the
Translation Faculty Fellows in Residence program. Fellows, each of whom serves
a two- to three-year fellowship in translation (as Visiting Assistant
Professor of Translation), are selected through a national competition.
Candidates must hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in literary translation,
translation studies, or comparative literature. Successful candidates must
have experience in college-level teaching and a record of publications
(minimum forty pages) as pieces in journals or books. The translation language
is open, with preference given to one or more of the languages taught in the
Division of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The genre of literary
translation is also open.

The Faculty Fellow in Residence will be fully integrated into an energetic
translation environment of emerging and seasoned translators and will gain a
comprehensive understanding of and hands-on experience in the diverse
dimensions of translation training. Fellows are expected to be in residence
for the academic year and participate fully in the life of the Translation
Program.

The Fellow will:
--Receive an appointment as a Faculty Fellow in Residence Visiting Assistant
Professor in Translation for a two-year residency, with the possibility of a
one-year extension, contingent on satisfactory performance. This is a 9-month
position that includes a salary, competitive benefits, and office space.
--Design and teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels: 6
courses per academic year (3-3 course load) in the Division of World
Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
--Mentor novice & emerging translators principally at the undergraduate but
also graduate levels, providing review and feedback on undergraduate capstone
projects and honors theses, mentoring students in professional pursuits (such
as submitting for publication or for grants), and participating in outreach
and engagement initiatives, such as humanities labs organized by the Center
for Language and Culture Learning.
--Benefit from a sustained program of mentorship by experienced practitioners
and teachers and scholars of translation
--Participate in admission reviews, curriculum planning, cultural and artistic
programs, professional development, and community outreach and engagement
initiatives.
--Complete a substantial creative or scholarly project: a book-length literary
translation manuscript of submittable quality, or a scholarly monograph or set
of essays.
