Russian at The University of Chicago

We offer four levels of Russian language, including Advanced Russian and Russian for Heritage Learners, so that students with no experience can reach advanced proficiency before they graduate.

If you have any previous experience with Russian as a heritage speaker, formal learner, or through self-study, please take the online placement test, so we find the class that best fits your level. Our experienced instructors are also specialists in Heritage Language Learning and can help you build your skills quickly and confidently.

In addition to language study, students may enroll in interdisciplinary content courses taught in English (no knowledge of Slavic languages required), as well as in a range of academic and cultural events.

Please direct questions about placement, competency, proficiency exams and courses to the  language coordinator Erik Houle at erhoule@uchicago.edu, or any of our Russian language instructors: Maria Yakubovich (beginner, intermediate and heritage learners), Mark Bougher (beginner and intermediate), and Valentina Pichugin (advanced and heritage learners).

For current courses, visit the courses page of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
