Lecture: Russian Environmental Activism and Civil Society in Russia

Environmental grass-root activism has been on the rise across various regions in Russia over the last few years. Many such local “green” campaigns have also proven to be successful, even in Russia's restrictive political regime, usually rather oppressive towards civil society groups. In this talk, Angelina Davydova will speak about environmental movements in Russia, the topics and causes they're working on, their forms of self-organizing, their strategies, and their results.

Workshop: Environmental Journalism

Even with shrinking space, political pressure, and direct closure for many traditional independent media outlets, specialized media projects, such as the ones dedicated to scientific or environmental journalism, have recently been booming in Russia. Angelina Davydova will discuss the rise of and recent developments in environmental journalism in Russia, including its various forms, from specialized online media to eco-blogging and Telegram channels. She will also speak about the challenges of environmental and climate communication in Russia, analyzing recent developments and trends.

Angelina Davydova is a prolific environmental journalist from Russia who focuses on climate change. As the director of the German-Russian Office of Environmental Information in St. Petersburg, Davydova regularly contributes to Russian and international media, including Science, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, The Conversation, Kommersant, Takie Dela, Open Democracy, RBC, and Plus One. She has served as an observer at the UN Climate Negotiations (UNFCCC) since 2008 in addition to her work as a Senior Lecturer at St. Petersburg State University in the School of Journalism, editor for the environmental magazine Environment and Law, Project Manager for the German-Russian Exchange (NGO), and board member of n-ost, a transnational media NGO.
