Description
The Museum of Modern Art is seeking a research fellow to support research on Central and Eastern European art and architecture, with a primary focus on the Baltic region and Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania for The Museum of Modern Arts’ Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) initiative as part of a broader study of the convergence of practices, themes, and discourses in the art of Central and Eastern Europe from the 20th-century to the present. Led by the senior curator of Photography and comprised of MoMA staff members, the Central and Eastern Europe group will commence an 18-month study on the Baltic region, followed by research on the Caucasus and Central Asia, including but not limited to, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. Following the direction of the group leader, and in consultation with International Program staff, the fellow plans, executes, and documents a lively program of seminars featuring international and domestic scholars at MoMA as well as group travel to the region of study.
Reports to: Senior Curator of Photography, with a direct liaison to the Associate Director of the Museum’s International Program.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates with the C-MAP group leader and International Program the implementation of a research plan and a program of visiting speakers at MoMA.
- Identifies artists, curators, and scholars relevant to research focus.
- Prepares for monthly C-MAP group meetings, including compiling relevant research materials, biographies, and meeting agendas in advance of the visits; corresponding with invited speakers; and maintaining records of contacts and activities.
- Plans and coordinates group travel, both domestic and international, with detailed itineraries of visits to cultural institutions, artists’ studios, collections, etc., which involves booking flights, coordinating transportation, hotels, dinners, and meetings;and attends group trips.
- Assists in the organization of and participates in joint symposia organized with the other C-MAP groups.
- Works closely with the International Program’s associate director, C-MAP coordinator, other C-MAP fellows, Editorial Board, and Museum staff to commission texts for and oversee the content development for the post web platform (post.at.moma.org).
- In conjunction with C-MAP coordinator and associate director in the International Program, reports on C-MAP group activities to funders.
- Researches and keeps C-MAP teams and group members informed about relevant exhibitions and events related to the group’s area of focus.
- Supports other Museum research activities related to C-MAP group focus, as needed.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in art history, cultural studies, and/or a related field in the humanities (or the equivalent in countries outside the United States). Specialized knowledge of art in the Baltic countries. Candidates with strong expertise in the artistic contexts of the Caucasus and Central Asia will also be considered. M. Phil or PhD candidates preferred, however curators or researchers with specialization in the areas of study will also be considered.
- Strong knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art history within a global context and additional knowledge of art history in the Central and Eastern Europe preferred.
- Demonstrated research and writing capabilities; excellent communication, interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams; strong administrative experience and knowledge of basic organizational procedures required.
- Written and spoken fluency in one or more languages of the Baltic countries preferred. Familiarity with travel and artistic centers of the Baltics and Central and Eastern Europe preferred.
- This is an 18 months grant-funded position.
