Ongoing Library Trials of Four CEERES Related Databases

The UChicago Library currently has ongoing trials of the digital archives of Moscow News and Ogonek as well as Brill’s Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture Online and Oxford Research Encyclopedias: Asian History. Your feedback is an important part of our decision making process, so please e-mail me with your opinions. All of these trials will be available through the month of March after which the Slavic and East European Studies Librarian will make a decision.

Moscow News Digital Archive (DA-MN) – Available March 2 – April 2
“Moscow News (pub. 1930-2014) was the oldest English-language newspaper in Russia and, arguably, the newspaper with the longest democratic history. From a mouthpiece of the Communist party to an influential advocate for social and political change, the pages of Moscow News reflect the shifting ideological, political, social and economic currents that have swept through the Soviet Union and Russia in the last century. The Moscow News Digital Archive contains all obtainable published issues (1930-2014, approx. 60,000 pages), including issues of the newspaper’s short-lived sister publication Moscow Daily News (1932-1938). The Moscow News Digital Archive offers scholars the most comprehensive collection available for this title, and features full page-level digitization, complete original graphics, and searchable text, and is cross-searchable with numerous other East View digital resources.”

Ogonek Digital Archive (DA-OGN) – Available March 2 – April 2
“Ogonek is one of the oldest weekly magazines in Russia, having been in continuous publication since 1923. Throughout its illustrious history Ogonek has published original works by such Soviet cultural luminaries as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Isaac Babel, Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the photographer Yuri Rost, and others.”

Oxford Research Encyclopedias: Asian History  - Available February 25 – March 25
“The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Asian History is a dynamic, innovative, comprehensive, self-reflexive online research encyclopedia, which provides access to state-of-the-art research and also connects readers to the full range of internet resources for research and teaching, including audio, visual, video materials, digitized archives, and other primary sources”

Brill’s Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture Online – Available February 24, 2020 – March 21, 2020
“This product gives access to both the Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture and Enzyklopädie jüdischer Geschichte und Kultur Online. From Europe to America to the Middle East, North Africa and other non-European Jewish settlement areas, the Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture covers the recent history of the Jews from 1750 until the 1950s.”
