POSITION SUMMARY
Based in Washington, DC, the Program Coordinator will support the administration, daily operations, and alumni activities for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. NSLI for Youth is a critical component of a multi-agency initiative to increase U.S. citizens’ capacity to engage foreign governments and peoples through the critical languages of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. NSLI for Youth provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students for overseas language immersion and virtual programs. NSLI-Y is a program of U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; American Councils leads its administration in cooperation with AFS-USA, iEARN-USA, and other partner organizations.
The Program Coordinator will report to the NSLI-Y Senior Program Manager for Administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in development and implementation of the NSLI-Y program;
- Supports daily operation of the NSLI-Y program by addressing administrative needs including filing, preparing mailings, and tracking of materials;
- Supports the department’s outreach and student recruitment efforts for NSLI-Y and Virtual NSLI-Y;
- Coordinates select NSLI-Y events and workshops, primarily for alumni;
- Handles inquiries about the NSLI-Y programs from the general public, prospective applicants, and their families;
- Contributes to the promotion of NSLI-Y on social media and virtual forums;
- Contributes to student recruitment and outreach, program publicity, application processing, participant selection and placement activities (including medical review);
- Coordinates and tracks of language testing results;
- Assists in operation of program databases;
- Contributes to the preparation of program reports, materials, and highlights for and about NSLI-Y alumni;
- Mentors and monitors NSLI-Y Alumni Representatives by coordinating workshop activities and providing guidance for their event planning and requirements;
- Supports NSLI-Y alumni in program outreach, special projects/events, other activities;
- Coordinates virtual and in-person re-entry activities for NSLI-Y alumni in collaboration with NSLI-Y staff;
- Communicates alumni activities and achievements within American Councils, with program sponsor and with partners; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in one of the target languages, international affairs, international education, education, or related field;
- At least three years of professional experience,
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to handle high volumes of communication effectively and professionally;
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team;
- Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous assignments and set appropriate priorities;
- Ability to exercise initiative, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, good judgment, and discretion;
- Ability to approach challenges with patience, flexibility, creativity, and a positive attitude;
- Strong abilities in Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams;
- Strong abilities in utilizing Zoom as an attendee and host;
- Experience and interest in international education, study abroad, and/or federally funded programs for cultural exchange;
- Experience using social media in professional settings;
- Experience engaging and motivating students in creative ways through teaching, mentoring, coaching, or tutoring;
- Experience and knowledge in digital storytelling preferred;
- Experience in workshop facilitation and event planning highly preferred; and
- Experience with alumni programming is strongly preferred.
Note: The facilitation of workshops and virtual activities may be necessary outside of regular business hours.
