Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe Now Accepting Applications

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is accepting applications for the 2022-23 Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) now through December 1, 2022. In partnership with the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS), ACLS will convene leading scholars from Eastern Europe and North America for a two-week residency, hosted by the American University in Bulgaria, in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from June 1 to June 15, 2023.
SISECSE will provide participating scholars with time to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. The program will cover travel, accommodation, and per diem expenses. Institute members will be expected to be in residence and to participate in all planned events for the duration of the institute.
In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will have the opportunity to participate in small group writing workshops, as well as a series of discussions on a key topic of shared academic interest. In 2023, we will explore “Scholarly Writing in the Digital Age.” Participants will address broad questions of accessibility and ideal audience; the democratization of scholarly writing, including via social media; current experiments blending scholarly writing with creative writing and memoir; the potential of digital publication; and other topics. Discussions will be held informally over several meals and in one seminar session. No special preparation or experience with the topic is required; the goal is to enrich the communal experience of the residency and encourage collective reflection on humanistic practice.
Eligibility
The competition is open to scholars in any field or discipline in the humanities and interpretive social sciences pursuing postdoctoral or advanced research in the region (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine). We seek to foster conversations across generations and fields.
Scholars should be based at institutions in North America (US, Canada, Mexico) or Central/Eastern Europe (see the list above).
Applications must be submitted in English, but the written work produced by the fellow or grantee can be in any language. Work proposed must be in the humanities and interpretive social sciences and must employ humanistic approaches and methods.
