Performance and conversation with award-winning musician Lenka Lichtenberg
Introduction by Sascha Ebeling
Deputy Dean of the Humanities
Upon the recent passing of her mother, Lenka Lichtenberg discovered two worn booklets of poetry tucked away under piles of paper in her Prague apartment. The haunting, disturbing poems, written by Lenka’s grandmother Anna Hana Friesová in the Theresienstadt concentration camp during World War 2, carry messages as relevant today as when they were written — with some offering unexpected rays of hope. In tribute to her grandmother, mother and all the people who perished in or survived the camp, Lichtenberg turned this poetry into songs. Her critically acclaimed album has risen to the top of the European World Music Radio charts and won the 2023 Juno Award for Global Music Album of The Year.
