Samshvilde Summer School in Archaeology and Bioarchaeology

Samshvilde Summer School is an intensive three-week course in basic archaeological and bioarchaeological practice. Trainees will have the unique opportunity to excavate Samshvilde’s royal medieval citadel (11th-13th cent. AD) and Sioni burial grounds. In this course, trainees will learn a variety of methodological skills and gain handson experience necessary for becoming a professional archaeologist. Training includes 1) field work; 2) postexcavation finds processing; 3) and seminars. Trainees will also learn about Georgian history and culture. At the end of this course, trainees will have experience in:

  • Archaeological and grave context excavation
  • Documentation and archiving
  • Artefact conservation
  • Scientific photography
  • Technical drawing
  • Basic osteology

Program dates. July 13th to August 4th, 2020 Application Deadline. February 14th, 2020 (may be extended until all spaces are filled) Academic Credits. Upon request (no enrollment fees or academic credits will be charged by the University of Georgia) Prerequisites.
